About Jim Winship and beechwood true
I have been a college professor for over three decades, a Professor of Social Work at the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater and also a Fulbright Scholar in Colombia and El Salvador. During that time, I have had extensive experience in staff development and training. I have also performed as a professional storyteller and have been conducting workshops on digital storytelling since 2009.
I have served on national professional boards and as a Whitewater City Council member for six years. I currently serve on the boards of two local non-profit organizations and the Whitewater Library Board.
I left full-time employment at UW-W in 2016 to have the time to devote to fully engaging with training opportunities and story-based work. Having the concentrated time to work on projects (instead of trying to find time on nights and weekends) is satisfying.
I have been trained by StoryCenter in Berkeley, California, the organization that pioneered digital storytelling. I create digital stories (see blog: Storying the Human Experience) and have conducted five three-day workshops in which college faculty and professional staff members each created their own digital stories. I have facilitated students in creating digital stories both at the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater -- including a series of stories on race, ethnicity and power -- and at the University of Cartagena, Colombia.
I am the sole proprietor of Beechwood True LLC, but I bring in other professionals -- especially for technical support -- as needed. As to the company name -- I grew up on Beechwood Road in Bristol, Tennessee, and there was something solid and beautiful about the canopy of beech trees that surrounded our house. "True" comes from the phrase "it rings true." My goal in all that I do is to create and present work that rings true, that is not only accurate and factual, but also resonates with those experiencing it.
